Frigidaire FGID2476SF review – CNET

After running a cycle with the heat dry option turned on, I opened the $850 Frigidaire FGID2476SF and was surprised to find the dishes cool to the touch. I examined the plates and bowls that comprise our set of testing dishes and found very few water spots and only the occasional missed droplet.

After running a cycle with the heat dry option turned on, I opened the $850 Frigidaire FGID2476SF and was surprised to find the dishes cool to the touch. I examined the plates and bowls that comprise our set of testing dishes and found very few water spots and only the occasional missed droplet. Frigidaire’s new EvenDry feature did its job well. But when you compare it to other dishwashers we’ve tested, it’s not the best. In fact, this $700 LG and this $400 GE both did better on their respective power dry tests.

The Frigidaire FGID2476SF’s power dry scores epitomize the rest of the dishwasher’s issues. It’s competent at cleaning, has a fine mix of cycles and a couple of nice extras like a smudge-proof stainless finish and great wine stem holders. But it’s not the best at anything it does. It’s not the best value, best cleaner or most feature rich. Head here for our current list of favorites. If those aren’t available at your local retailer and the FGID2476SF is on sale, it’s competent and worth your consideration.

The Frigidaire FGID2476SF combines classy looks with EvenDry

Stylish design

The FGID2476SF has a lot of niceties I’ve come to expect from dishwashers in the Frigidaire Gallery series. The smudgeproof stainless finish looks great and does well to resist fingerprints. The stem holders securely kept our wine glasses in place. The upper rack raises and lowers a couple of inches with a simple lift. Plus, the blue wheel of jets at the bottom — called OrbitClean — gets water into the nooks of your dishes and avoids missed spots.

Otherwise, this $850 model rounds out its features with six different cycles — Heavy, Normal, 30 Minute Wash, China Crystal, Energy Saver and Rinse Only. It runs at a reasonably quiet 51 dB and holds as many as 14 place settings. I’ll attest that we were comfortably able to load our test set of 10 place settings.

A couple of other extras also stand out. The EvenDry feature is a new addition to Frigidaire models this year. EvenDry uses a fan to circulate heat that’s similar to a convection fan in an oven. The FGID2476SF also has a “Stay-in-Place” door. As you’d expect, you can open the door of the FGID2476SF and set it to whatever angle you want, and it’ll stay put. I liked this little extra, and it’s a nice touch if you want to open your door a certain way at the end of a cycle to let out the steam.

You can buy the $850 Frigidaire FGID2476SF now from Home Depot, Best Buy, Sears and other large appliance retailers. I’m a big fan of the smudge-proof stainless finish, but you can also find it in black or white for $20 less. Head to Frigidaire’s site to find retailers in your area. As usual with large appliances, look for a discount off of the list price. Home Depot has it right now for $640.

Comparatively sparse

Several of the specs of the FGID2476SF fall short of the comparable $700 LG LDF5545ST, which has room for 15 place settings, offers nine cycles, and runs even quieter at 48 dB. The LG LDF5545ST also has a few creative options you can add onto your cycle, such as washing only half of the dishwasher at a time or turning the water pressure up for your dishes on the lower rack while gently spraying the upper rack.

The FGID2476SF has a few options itself, but they’re all pretty basic. The water pressure options are confusingly worded — you pick between scour, surge and spray, which are essentially high, medium and low. The FGID2476SF has a stainless tub and hidden control panel which are nice for the price, but I wish it had a third rack, specialized water jets, Wi-Fi smarts or something else to help it stand out. The $600 GE GDF610PMJES is much more feature-rich and costs less.

Comcast Increases Internet Speeds Across Florida

Rollouts of the new speeds will begin in early November and continue through mid-December, and will be available across all of Florida.

“Comcast already provides the nation’s fastest and most reliable internet and in-home Wi-Fi speeds, but our goal is to continually push the envelope for our customers,” said Amy Smith, senior vice president for Comcast’s Florida Region.

“Boosting internet speeds, building out our Wi-Fi and fiber networks and introducing innovative new services like xFi and Xfinity Gigabit are all examples of how we are delivering more value for our customers and enhancing their online experience.”

To get the new speeds, customers may need to re-start their modems, which can be done manually or through the Xfinity My Account app. Comcast will notify customers and provide instructions before the changes take effect. Comcast has increased Internet speeds 17 times in the past 16 years.

Today’s announcement follows a number of moves the company has made to enhance its high-speed Internet offerings, including:

An expansion of its national Wi-Fi network, which now includes 18 million hotspots Doubling its network capacity every 18 to 24 months Introducing xFi, a free platform that lets customers personalize, manage and control their home Wi-Fi experience Launching 2 gigabit and 1 gigabit-per-second home Internet services

Other recent moves that capitalize on Comcast’s growing internet and wireless presence include the April 2017 launch of Xfinity Mobile, which combines the nation’s largest and most reliable 4G LTE network with the largest Wi-Fi network. It’s available to all Xfinity Internet customers, and includes up to five lines with unlimited nationwide talk and text, no line access fees, and 100 MB of shared data.

August adds DoorSense to Alexa skill – CNET

August Home announced today that DoorSense technology is now part of the August Smart Lock skill for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant.

DoorSense tells users if their door is open or closed, in addition to whether it’s locked or unlocked.

August Home announced today that DoorSense technology is now part of the August Smart Lock skill for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant.

DoorSense tells users if their door is open or closed, in addition to whether it’s locked or unlocked. We got to know DoorSense via the August app with the September release of the August Smart Lock and August Smart Lock Pro. It works much like a traditional door/window sensor with the lock itself acting as one of the two sensors. DoorSense proves especially useful as a safeguard against a door being left ajar with a deadbolt that hasn’t engaged properly.

Now, DoorSense has been added to the August Alexa skill. Users will be able to ask Alexa if the door is locked and receive confirmation if the door is open or closed. You’ll also be able to ask Alexa to ask August to lock or unlock a door, and Alexa will let you know if your DoorSense-calibrated door is open or closed. The unlock skill does require users to set a four- to 12-digit security code during the account linking process for heightened security.

To use the August Smart Lock or August Smart Lock Pro with Alexa requires the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge or an August Doorbell Cam to connect the Bluetooth lock to Wi-Fi. For more information about August products and services, visit August’s website. For a complete list of Alexa skills, see our list here.

Haven Life Launches Emergency Services App, LifeLink, to Provide Protection Beyond Life Insurance

The FCC estimates that more than 70% of 9-1-1 calls come from mobile phones, most of which can’t be precisely located. Available on iOS and Android devices, Haven Life’s LifeLink, which is powered by RapidSOS’ award-winning technology platform, addresses a safety concern that many Americans and their families face.

“As a husband and father of two, I can attest that family is everything,” said Yaron Ben-Zvi, CEO and Co-Founder of Haven Life. “Since launching Haven Life, we’ve sought out ways to make life less hard outside of just financial protection. LifeLink is a transformative app that protects us, our partners, our children, our parents – anyone we love – no matter where we are.”

Along with one-touch 9-1-1 dialing, LifeLink users can call emergency services on behalf of a loved one, transmitting their location and other relevant information directly to the dispatch center closest to them. With the Family Connect feature, users can share their location, see family members’ real-time locations and easily and discreetly ask for help. And, in situations where users are unable to speak, text messages can be used to communicate with 9-1-1.

The LifeLink app uses cloud telecommunications and data analytics to connect users to emergency dispatchers over multiple channels (including WiFi, LTE, 4G, 3G, 2G), helping reach 9-1-1 in situations with challenging connectivity or limited bandwidth.

“Haven Life’s dedication to using technology to enhance the safety, security, and wellness of their community is directly aligned with RapidSOS’ mission of harnessing the power of technology to save lives,” said RapidSOS CEO Michael Martin. “We are thrilled to partner with their team to offer life-saving technology to more families than ever before.”

Haven Life’s LifeLink isn’t just for your phone, it’s for your peace of mind. Download it today.

*Haven Life’s LifeLink app is free for one year for users of iOS and Android devices. After the first year, users who want to continue the service will have to pay a fee for an individual or family plan. Typically, app provider RapidSOS charges a monthly fee of about $5 for a family plan and $3 for an individual plan.

The best cheap iPad deals pre-Black Friday 2017

If you’re looking for cheap iPad deals – you’ve most certainly come to the right place! The iPhone may not be the best phone these days, but the iPad is definitely still the best tablet.

If you’re looking for cheap iPad deals – you’ve most certainly come to the right place! The iPhone may not be the best phone these days, but the iPad is definitely still the best tablet. And because there are so many models these days, it’s easier than ever to find the cheap iPad deals of your dreams.

Whether you’re after a deal on a brand new iPad or the iPad Air 2 or iPad mini from a couple of years ago, we’ve found the best deals so you don’t have to. Even with Black Friday deals, iPads can be a bit expensive, but we are getting towards discount season. Check out the Android models in our cheap tablet deals page.

Here’s a snapshot of the latest prices on a selection of popular iPad models. After that, keep scrolling for an extensive list of prices for every iPad model on the market today.

Here are the best cheap iPad deals on all available models…

New iPad 9.7 deals

The brand new iPad 9.7-inch model is the successor to the iPad Air 2. It’s a fraction thicker but contains an improved A9 chip with an M9 coprocessor for enhanced performance. Surprisingly, this new model is actually cheaper than the iPad Air 2, making it the choice for anyone wanting a larger pad without the high costs of the Pro model.

In the US, prices for the 32GB model launched at $329, compared to £339 in the UK and $469 in Australia. The 128GB model’s price at launch was US$429/£429/AU$599. Opt for the cellular/SIM card 32GB model prices are around US$469/£469/AU$669, with the 128GB model priced at US$559/£559/AU$799. Ready to order a new iPad now? Then you better take a look at the new iPad deals below.

iPad Pro (2017) deals

Hey, wasn’t there supposed to be an iPad Pro 2 this year? Well, yes, but Apple instead decided to name their new iPad Pro, the iPad Pro. Thanks, Apple. We can help make sure you’re able to spot the differences between the two though to make sure you don’t buy the old ones by mistake if you want the latest and best iPad Pro deals.

First up, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is actually a brand new size in the iPad Pro range, as the previous smallest model was 9.7-inches. There is a new 12.9-inch model though. But how do you tell the difference between the old and new iPad Pro versions? Our go-to tactic is to check the internal spec and look for the one key difference. The newest iPad Pros use an A10X processor, and the older ones have the A9X chip. So if you want to be sure you’re getting the latest version, look out for that A10X processor chip. Some retailers may have ‘2017’ in the listing title too, but many, including Apple, don’t.

So let’s look at reasons to buy the new iPad Pro over the older ones. The A10X is a faster processor to give it the edge over the older iPad Pro although the performance boost isn’t huge to be honest. The rear camera gets a modest megapixel boost. The front camera gets a bigger boost though for a much clearer FaceTime experience.

Both of the new models are available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB hard drive sizes. You’ll also need to decide if you want a standard iPad Pro with only Wi-Fi or mobile tethering options available for online activities, or to opt for the considerably more expensive cellular models and a data-only SIM only deal too.

The new iPad Pro screens screens now benefit from smaller bezels and an improved display, for arguably the best iPad screen yet. All things considered though, the list of changes for the new iPad Pro aren’t exactly revolutionary. If the minor improvements don’t float your boat, you should take a look further down this page as we’ve listed the best deals available for the older iPad Pro models. There’s a strong chance you’ll be able to save money by opting for an older model for a while. If not, the latest prices for the new iPad Pro deals are directly below.

iPad Pro 9.7-inch deals

The older 9.7 model is much cheaper than the new 10.5-incher

The iPad Pro 9.7 used to be the gold standard in iPad design, but it’s been dethroned by its slightly larger, yet younger sibling. This model originally arrived in March 2016 instead of an iPad Air 3 and packs many of the outstanding features of the iPad Pro 12.9-inch model. That’s great news for anyone who wanted pro features in a smaller design. This is the cheapest of all the iPad Pro models today too.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch deals

The older iPad Pro is much cheaper than the new version

The iPad Pro isn’t a laptop replacement in the way power users will hope. But it is, by some distance, one of the most brilliant tablets ever released. Using its enormous 12.9-inch screen is simply gorgeous and the power inside is unrivalled in the tablet world. So to anyone that wants an iPad with more power, a better media and reading experience and more abilities than ever before, there’s no question here. Go for the iPad Pro and you’ll love it. With the new 2017 version on shelves now, we’re seeing the price drop on this still excellent iPad.

iPad Air 2 deals

One of the best ‘normal’ iPads available

Apple improved on perfection with the iPad Air 2. There’s a newer iPad 9.7 that acts as a spiritual successor to the iPad Air 2, but you can often find this one for less, especially if you’re happy with refurbished models. The combination of power, better screen, improved design and upgraded OS make this a very, very compelling device – and that’s before getting into the fact the app ecosystem is so much stronger than on Android. It’s even better now iOS 10 is capable of scaling apps so seamlessly – the days of low-res iPhone apps are gone. Here are the best cheap iPad Air 2 deals currently available…

iPad Air deals

It’s a year older but this iPad is still a fantastic tablet

It’s a joy to hold the iPad Air – even though it’s now the thicker option compare to the iPad above. From the clever construction to the fast processor to the improved user interface, this iPad may be a bit older but it’s still excellent. Choose a cheap iPad Air deal from these options we’ve found:

iPad mini 4 deals

The best 7-inch tablet ever made?

One of the major changes with the iPad mini 4 over last year’s mini 3 is its design. It may look the same, but it’s been slimmed down from 7.5mm to a wafer thin 6.1mm. It’s also now more powerful, has a stunning screen and the battery is still a 10-hour beast. The A8 processor is a good step up from the A7 inside the mini 3 so if you’re going to play 3D games or throw around some of the more hefty iPad apps from the App Store, this is certainly your best option.

iPad mini 3 deals

A great iPad, but we prefer the mini 4 now

If you want an iPad mini – this is another great option because it’s almost as good as the iPad mini 4 above, but prices aren’t always cheaper on this one now. The 7.9-inch screen is the perfect size in our opinion – you can hold it in one hand but it’s still big enough to be satisfying when you watch videos or browse the web. Here’s every cheap iPad mini 3 deal you could ever want, and then some…

iPad mini 2 deals

The first iPad mini with Retina display is a deal-tastic marvel

If you’re looking for the best iPad deal you might well find it on this iPad right here. Deals on this iPad fluctuate regularly – you can often find it for cheaper than the iPad mini 3 but sometimes it’s more expensive, depending on retailers and stock levels. If the iPad mini 3 above is cheaper, definitely get that one over this! Here are the best cheap iPad mini 2 deals currently available…

iPad mini deals

The cheapest iPad out there but it’s still a winner

So the original iPad mini may not have a Retina display but it’s available for well under £200 in the UK and so for the right deal it’s still worth your while considering. Again though, if the price is similar to the iPad deals above, get the ones above if for no other reason than the super-sharp Retina displays they offer. Here are the best cheap iPad mini deals we can find…

The best iPad Air 2 deals pre-Black Friday 2017

Apple’s iPad Air 2 was by some distance the best value tablet on the planet, and on this page we’re going to help you find one at the right price, whether it be a standalone iPad Air 2 wi-fi or an iPad Air 2 4G on contract.

Apple’s iPad Air 2 was by some distance the best value tablet on the planet, and on this page we’re going to help you find one at the right price, whether it be a standalone iPad Air 2 wi-fi or an iPad Air 2 4G on contract.

Either way, this is a device that anyone using a tablet from 2012 or earlier should be thinking very strongly about upgrading to – it’s that good. It’s always worth keeping an eye out later in the year too for some special Black Friday deals.

After the latest and greatest iPad on the market? Check out our iPad Pro deals

The combination of lots more power compared to the original iPad Air, a far better screen, improved design and an upgraded OS make it the only real option for anyone who wants to buy a serious tablet – and that’s before getting into the fact the tablet app ecosystem is so much stronger than on Android.

And the iPad Air 2 is even better now that iOS 8 is capable of scaling apps so seamlessly – the days of low-res iPhone apps are gone. It’s another hammer blow to the Google tablet market, although you can still be fully confident that’s going to catch up in quality soon.

That said, Apple has just launched a new iPad 9.7-inch model that’s an iPad Air 3 in all but name. Check out the new iPad deals.

The best cheap GoPro deals pre-Black Friday 2017

No one expected GoPro to be so successful when it invented the action camera back in 2004. But here we are, and here you are thinking of buying one.

These things are the best of the best, but they don’t come cheap – well most of the time at least.

No one expected GoPro to be so successful when it invented the action camera back in 2004. But here we are, and here you are thinking of buying one.

These things are the best of the best, but they don’t come cheap – well most of the time at least. We’ve rounded up all of the best GoPro deals, so that if you do want to buy one, you can make sure you get the best possible price. Our deals are checked every day to make sure all GoPro prices are up to date! We didn’t really see any significant discounts on Black Friday, so we’d jump on any discounts you see rather than wait.

If you’re just after a regular camera deal, be sure to check out our guide to the best cheap cameras.

What’s a good GoPro deal?

Well, that’s up to you. We’ve ordered the GoPros on this page in order of prestige. You can get some seriously discounted GoPro deals if you opt for some of the older models or the relatively new unnumbered GoPro Hero Session, which offers all the best GoPro features but in an easy to use and very affordable model. Naturally, we’ve updated our cheap GoPro deals page with the brand new Hero 6 Black deals for those of you looking the best GoPro action camera yet.

4K recording has never been better in the GoPro range, as the new GoPro Hero 6 Black now records at a super smooth 60 fps (frame per second). Image stabilization is super important given the active lifestyles most GoPros record, so it’s great to see this newest model improve even further. Even the 1080p recording has been improved with a boost to 240fps – excellent for maximizing those slow-motion shots!

The Hero5 Black is the GoPro we always wanted. The new waterproof design out-of-the-box makes it more resilient and the new camera has enough to make it a convincing update. The picture quality is better, it finally has video stabilization and the touchscreen makes it easier to use than any other GoPro. Sale items aside, it’s cheaper than most prices for the older GoPro Hero 4 Black now too.

The GoPro Hero5 Session is a capable 4K action camera with a minimalist design that pushes the specs to the max within its cube-shaped confines. The Hero5 Session is also a major specs boost for GoPro’s tiniest action camera. It now shoots stabilized 4K video and has a variety of new field of view modes. It’s more expensive than its predecessor, but worth the upgrade.

The model, simply called the GoPro Hero Session, has replaced the very similar GoPro Hero 4 Session. They’re the same price and considerably cheaper than the most recent GoPro Hero5 Session. Actually, looking around at the various GoPro models, this looks like the cheapest of the lot seeing as the older GoPro Hero is proving hard to get a hold of nowadays. So if you want an entry level GoPro, this could be the one to go for.

Compared to the models before it, the GoPro Hero4 Black offers the best image quality, plus a 2x more powerful processor that delivers super slow motion at 240 frames per second. High-resolution 4K30 and 2.7K601 video combines with 1080p120 and 720p240 slow motion to enable immersive footage of you and your world.

With the arrival of the newer Hero5, expect to see prices drop soon. As things stand many retailers are selling it for more than the Hero5! So it may be worth checking out the deals on the newer model (see above) before opting for this one.

UPDATE: This model has now been discontinued in Australia, but retailers could still have some stock available.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver was the first-ever GoPro to feature a built-in touch display. Controlling the camera, framing shots and playing back content is very convenient with this model – just view, tap and swipe the screen.

This GoPro captures 1080p60 and 720p120 video, plus 12MP photos at 30 frames per second. It’s not the best anymore, but it often cheaper than the GoPro Hero4 Black model above.

Update: No longer available at most UK and Australian stores. This model doesn’t record in 4K, but it does offer 1080p 60fps video and 10MP photos at speeds of up to 10 frames per second. Built-in Wi-Fi enables you to use the GoPro App to control the camera remotely, preview shots and share your favorites on Facebook, Twitter and more.

Compatible with all GoPro mounts, you can wear it or attach it to your gear for immersive POV footage of your favorite activities.

8. GoPro Karma Drone deals

Looking to take to the skies with your GoPro camera? There are certainly cheaper camera drones available, but this is one of the best premium setups out there. You can buy the drone on its own (often listed as ‘GoPro Karma Light’ or ‘GoPro Karma with harness’), or get it bundled with the excellent GoPro Hero5 Black camera. We’ve included price comparison charts for both below, but you may be able to save a bit of cash by buying the drone and camera separately (check out the GoPro Hero5 Black deals near the top of this page). You’ll find the best GoPro Karma prices below though.

The early Kindle ereaders don’t have LCD screens or powerful internal components which means they’re usually a lot cheaper than tablets and phones. The lack of a glass screen is fantastic for glare-free reading though and an immediate improvement over using the Kindle app on your phone or tablet.

The Kindle Voyage normally has a price of about US$220/£170/AU$299 so if you can get it for cheaper than that you’re onto a winner. After that, there isn’t a huge difference in features so it all depends how much you want to spend. If you can find the Kindle Paperwhite for under US$120/£110/AU$169 you’re getting a good price, while the Kindle 2016 model (which has all but disappeared from Australian stores) has a fairly static price of US$80/£59, but every now and then it dips lower. With the new Kindle Oasis model arriving recently, we may see the older models’ prices drop soon.

For the tablets, the best thing to do is just work out how much you want to spend and pick up the model that sits closest to your budget. The HDX models are the good ones so do go for one of those if you can.

What do ‘Special Offers’ mean on the Kindle listings?

When looking at a Kindle ereader listing, whether it’s on Amazon’s website, or on a different retailer’s site, you’ll often see ‘includes special offers’ in the title or item description. Choose without special offers and the price will jump up £10/US$20.

Essentially, these Special Offers act as Amazon-based screensaver-style advertisements on your Kindle device. So when you pop your Kindle on from sleep mode you’ll see an ad for a book on Amazon’s Kindle store, or maybe a third party ad.

Annoying right? Actually, I opted for with Special Offers (I do love a cheap deal), and it’s not bothered me one bit. You can swipe the ad away easily (no trying to find the tiny X icon here) and get on with your reading straight away. When in sleep mode, the ads cycle on the screen, but they’re not illuminated and they don’t seem to consume any power. They don’t slow anything down when powering on the device after shutdown either.

Seeing as they don’t interfere with the experience at all, I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra £10 to block them. Hey, some of them (sales ads etc) have been worth clicking through to. If you really don’t like them though, you can always pay the difference at a later date to get them removed. So we’d opt for the cheaper ‘includes special offers’ option first.

Here are the best Kindle deals currently available…

Kindle Paperwhite deals

The best standard Kindle ever is a value-for-money winner

The 6th generation Kindle Paperwhite is the best standard Kindle yet, it’s the most cost effective ereader on the market and it easily beats the Kobo Aura on performance and design. Unlike the cheaper model, this one comes with screen lighting. Amazon has managed to create a fast e-ink tablet with inventive reading apps. You can lookup words in the dictionary without leaving your page, or even flick through any relevant Wikipedia entries for most words or terms. The latest version’s screen is now just as good as the more expensive Voyage model. As far as value for money goes, this is the one to beat.

Amazon Kindle (2016) deals

The new 2016 Kindle (also known as the ‘All-New Kindle’ and ‘Kindle Touch 2016’ in Australia) is the updated version of the entry level Kindle last released in 2014. If you want the cheapest option, this is the one you should go for as the 2014 version has been discontinued and any deals you see are probably for preowned or refurbished units. With prices starting around £60/US$80/AU$109 you’re getting a bargain. The 2016 model is also available in white (the 2014 was black only), it’s lighter, thinner, has double the RAM speed and double the storage capacity at 4GB. The lack of a lit screen is the only thing holding it back really.

Kindle Oasis deals

The luxury waterproof ereader you’ve been waiting for?

The reinvigorated all-new Kindle Oasis costs US$249/£229/AU$389 for the cheapest Wi-Fi version. This is an upgrade over the older Oasis (which is no longer available) and a huge improvement. It’s 15% cheaper, bigger and also the first waterproof kindle, arguably justifying the top end price-tag. The Kindle Oasis is also the first kindle to support Aubidle audio books, although you’ll need a pair of bluetooth wireless headphones to use this feature as there’s no built-in speaker or 3.5mm headphone port. This new Kindle ereader’s 7-inch screen makes it the largest in the current Kindle range and tempting for readers wanting to view a larger page, meaning you won’t have to turn pages as often. The page turn buttons are given a wider bezel on the side than the Kindle Voyage, making it easier to hold one-handed – the screen will flip over to accommodate left-handed readers too. The considerably cheaper Voyage and Paperwhite models are excellent alternatives and feature the same screen resolution. That larger screen and waterproofing for peace of mind are pretty tempting though.

Kindle Voyage deals

A modest improvement over the Paperwhite

The Voyage used to be the most expensive Kindle around before the Oasis arrived, but at least we’re seeing the price drop now. Amazon’s Voyage is still one of the best ebook readers available. It’s more compact than most other Kindles and the screen is sharper than the standard Kindle. Although, the latest version of the far cheaper Paperwhite now comes with the same 300ppi screen, leaving this model looking a tad overpriced by comparison. Modest improvements on the Voyage include a flush display making the device easier to keep clean, adaptive screen lighting for easier lighting adjustments and additional page turning buttons.

Amazon tablet deals

Want something a bit more advanced than a Kindle ereader? If your needs are a bit more media-intensive as you want a handheld device for gaming, viewing movies (especially on Amazon Prime) and browsing the web, an Amazon tablet could be for you. Naturally, there’s a Kindle app, but the glass screen can be a hindrance for extended reading sessions.

Australian readers should note that these Fire tablets aren’t available Down Under.

Amazon Fire 7 deals

Amazon’s most popular Fire tablet

Sitting at the budget end of Amazon’s Kindle tablet range, the Fire 7 is generally the cheapest of the lot as it doesn’t have a HD screen. Amazon has just refreshed the Fire 7 range though and it now comes with Alexa, the virtual assistant from the Amazon Echo devices. You can also have different profiles – some for the kids – through Amazon FreeTime.

Amazon Fire HD 8 deals

The All-New Amazon Fire HD 8 is an improved beast

For this low price, the Amazon Fire HD 8 is one of the best tablets around, especially if you’re happy to jump into Amazon’s ecosystem. Mobile gamers will appreciate the improved tech inside the more recent versions as it comes with more storage, 50% more RAM and a 1.3GHz processor. Better yet, the 2017 edition seen below now comes with integrated Alexa – the excellent virtual assistant from the Amazon Echo range. You’re not paying any more for the privilege either, so we’d only recommend the latest version.

Amazon Fire HD 10 deals

The All-New Amazon Fire HD 10 is a much-needed upgraded

The new and improved Fire HD 10-inch tablet finally joins Amazon’s other Fire tablets with the ‘All-New’ treatment. This is good news for buyers as this replacement is cheaper than the scant few deals available for the old Fire HD 10.

The cheapest model now comes with 32GB of storage instead of 16GB, has a clear full HD 1080p screen and has twice as much RAM to run even faster than before. All this and the RRP comes in at just £149/$149. The headline feature though is the introduction of the voice-controlled Alexa app (one and the same as the Echo devices) to the tablet.

We’re a bit sad to see the old aluminium body go, as it looks a little less premium with the plastic finishes (black, red and blue available at launch so far). But seeing as we’d be putting a protective cover on it anyways, it doesn’t really make any difference when we think about it.

Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition

Got tech-hungry children, but don’t want them to get their grubby mitts on your tablet or phone all the time? The Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet could be the answer. In addition to enhanced durability (look at the size of that housing), it also comes with a two-year guarantee, which covers the tablet -even if the kids break it- no questions asked. There are plenty of software safeguards too, such as making sure they can only watch appropriate content online, adjustable screen-time limits and access to loads of age-appropriate games.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition

Bigger and better than the Fire 7 Kids. You’re getting a larger screen with HD visuals. The sound is better too as the mono speaker has been banished for Dolby Atmos and dual stereo speakers. The battery has been boosted up to around 12 hours, compared to the eight offered by the smaller model and you get 32GB of storage instead of 16GB. You’re still getting that same tough build quality and two year guarantee too. Come on, don’t make your child grow up with SD visuals. Doesn’t everyone deserve HD, even if they are going to smear jam all over it and throw it around a bit?
